Interwoven
The book Interwoven summarises the results of the same-called project by artist Diana Scherer. Scherer uses a distinctive technique namely the natural growth process of plant roots. The intricate patterns of her grown textiles take inspiration from microscopic studies of cell structures from the botanical world, along with familiar archetypes and forms found in our daily surroundings.
The book has six different paper types in different paper colours which reflects the growth rings of a tree. The paper starts with dark brown cover material, the bark, and becomes brighter the more you go to the middle of the book and again turns darker towards the endcover. The different shades invite contemplation of natural processes and humankind’s capacity and constraints in influencing them. They also highlight the contemporary detachment between humans and the natural world. The invited authors focus on the various sides of Scherer’s project from their fields of expertise.
